I have approached the Psychic City theme many different ways using several techniques and imagery but the core of its inspiration stays the same for me. The piles of houses and buildings piled, draped, thrown and meticulously constructed on top of each other. The pulsing, breathing and seething towers whose inhabitants are invisible. The symbiotic and parasitic incarnation of the metropolis. But please do not get me wrong! I love to live in the city and have for many years been part of the mechanism. This vision is a subjective personification of collective struggle and celebration of personal experience within city limits.
The summer 2018 edition is a run of silkscreened wood blocks that are coated in a thick, clear resin. This hard shiny coating pops the color and saturation of the multiple layers of colored inks. The work vibrates like a tiny piece of the city itself. A talisman that carries the energy of memories of all the cities that live in the mind.
This is #4 of 38 in the edition. Each block in the edition is completely unique from one another. The colors and placements of the screened images are all done one at a time giving a separate life to all the blocks that make the whole.
#4 is full of bright pinks mingled with iridescent gold and teal. The luster is hard to capture in a photo like the one shown here. To behold the work in person makes all the difference. This is an unfortunate reality of online viewing of art.
#4 is also presented floating in a custom handmade shadowbox frame.
The frame is custom made and one of a kind. It is 7.25' x 1' x 7".
The back mat is made of dyed and waxed rice paper on wood. Each back mat is unique and one of a kind as well. All in all what you have here is a one of a kind that exist as part of a bigger group. The meanings of the works transcend the image. Each piece is a lot like you and I.
